Time to clear the air in Antibes
Plans to ban smoking in outdoor public spaces
Local press have suggested that the town of Antibes will bring in a smoking ban in some public spaces, as early as this summer. Having experimented with the ban in the past, it is now hoped that it will become official.
The city council will vote today and it is expected to be unanimous in favour of the ban, which will not only include normal cigarettes but also their electronic friends. All forms of smoke will be banished from the clean air of Antibes.
As many as ten outdoor public spaces could become smoke-free. These areas are expected to be the beaches of Richelieu and Garoupe, Jardin Pauline, Parc Exflora, Château de la Pinède, Parc Rabiac-Estagnol, Villa Eilenroc and its gardens, and also the Cap d’Antibes coastal pathway.
In a bid to ensure that cigarette butts do not pile up around the dedicated 'smoke-free' areas, the council are planning to install appropriate waste collectors for the butts. A development which is estimated to cost around 25,000 euros.
We think that this is money well spent, and we're looking forward to enjoying more of Antibes this summer...without the plumes of smoke that get blown in your face.
